As SmOOV said there are field operators who've successfully run leagues and of course there's the clan wars, neither of which can really be considered military simulations though. As far as we know the MilSims group here in Queensland is the first of its kind. We've had enquiries from around the world. There's currently a high level of interest from Victoria and they're in the process of forming an association. We're very much hoping the guys in Vic will run with it so we can get some inter-state comps going.
The challenge is and always has been in determining the degree of realism the majority of players are most happy with and how we construct the rule set to support that. Right from day one MilSims was intended to be the most realistic simulation possible within the limitations of the equipment, insurance policies etc.
Unfortunately however, for those of us who get the most fun out of taking it to that level, there are just as many who's definition of 'fun' is to keep it more casual and avoid getting too regimental. It's a divisive issue that's drawn criticism from both within and outside the group and I don't believe we've yet achieved a sufficient degree of balance. Anyone from Team A at LazerStorm this year will be acutely aware of the problems that arise when participants from both ends of the spectrum are put in a position where they're required to co-operate.
We could offer two levels of realism but we'd need the player numbers to support it. MilSims is run by Logan Laser Skirmish and there are certain business costs that need to be met. It's not economically feasible to introduce new aspects to the proceedings unless we get enough bums on seats to support them. We already get complaints about the fees but where else can one go to participate in high level competition with state of the art commercial and DIY gear for six hours for $35? Players with their own taggers only pay $20. It doesn't get any cheaper than that! It's a measure of Cougar's support for the community that he's willing to offer his services for such a rock bottom price.
Then there's the operating systems to consider. Our system of choice is FragTag. No other manufacturer offers the features or level of co-operation that gives us what we need to immerse ourselves in such a realistic combat simulation. And now with the release of V3 they've raised the bar to an all-time high.
If manufacturers were willing to agree upon and develop a compatible mode that would be great but most won't even consider it. They're too busy trying to grab the biggest piece if the pie.
Yeah, MilSims is very much in its infancy. We're working on a new website specifically to give milsimmers somewhere to go where they won't be shunned and criticised by the masses and can feel at home. The challenge to create a sport that isn't exactly socially acceptable, satisfies the majority of its participants, offers the greatest level of realism without falling foul of Police, Government and the wider community and is financially viable for the business that supports it is immense but we're working on it.

Combat Engineers - Unlike EMO's, we can build a bridge and GET OVER IT!
