Thread: Organised Events?

  1. Organised Events?

I was just wondering, is their an organized body who controls the games you guys talk about or is it just groups just getting together with organized play?
I know in the states on the paintball side we have the NPPL, PSP, and the such that keeps team scores through out the year and has overall winner of the series.
Do you guys (Assusies) have the same set-up or you still in the early stages of building up that way?

Just curious, as i hope we are heading that way with this type of game. It seems to be catching on but still in the early, early stages here.
The world only cares about perception. How are you perceived?

  2. I believe (what's currently called) MilSims is actually run as a business. Fees are used to cover things like field rental and upkeep, and public liability insurance.

In the past there has been no real scores kept as each event is objective based and (being a squad-based format) players individual scores aren't relevant to the overall success for each team. However, on the odd occasion, scores were emailed out to players so that those that were interested in their accuracy and whatnot could see how they went.

  3. So there is no teams playing teams, just getting togther and playing. Has anyone ever thought about starting some kind of league?

  4. The Milsims guys do have set rosters for thier teams, eg Danger and Engage, but do not play so called competition, the style of play doesnt let you do that its all scenario based with a overall story

Apart from that the local BFS operators have clan wars which is what your talking about weekly competitions like a football or basketball game.

Both styles of gameplay suit and attract certain people, majority of the guys on here rather milsims or the occasional skirmish

  5. As SmOOV said there are field operators who've successfully run leagues and of course there's the clan wars, neither of which can really be considered military simulations though. As far as we know the MilSims group here in Queensland is the first of its kind. We've had enquiries from around the world. There's currently a high level of interest from Victoria and they're in the process of forming an association. We're very much hoping the guys in Vic will run with it so we can get some inter-state comps going.

The challenge is and always has been in determining the degree of realism the majority of players are most happy with and how we construct the rule set to support that. Right from day one MilSims was intended to be the most realistic simulation possible within the limitations of the equipment, insurance policies etc.
Unfortunately however, for those of us who get the most fun out of taking it to that level, there are just as many who's definition of 'fun' is to keep it more casual and avoid getting too regimental. It's a divisive issue that's drawn criticism from both within and outside the group and I don't believe we've yet achieved a sufficient degree of balance. Anyone from Team A at LazerStorm this year will be acutely aware of the problems that arise when participants from both ends of the spectrum are put in a position where they're required to co-operate.
We could offer two levels of realism but we'd need the player numbers to support it. MilSims is run by Logan Laser Skirmish and there are certain business costs that need to be met. It's not economically feasible to introduce new aspects to the proceedings unless we get enough bums on seats to support them. We already get complaints about the fees but where else can one go to participate in high level competition with state of the art commercial and DIY gear for six hours for $35? Players with their own taggers only pay $20. It doesn't get any cheaper than that! It's a measure of Cougar's support for the community that he's willing to offer his services for such a rock bottom price.

Then there's the operating systems to consider. Our system of choice is FragTag. No other manufacturer offers the features or level of co-operation that gives us what we need to immerse ourselves in such a realistic combat simulation. And now with the release of V3 they've raised the bar to an all-time high.
If manufacturers were willing to agree upon and develop a compatible mode that would be great but most won't even consider it. They're too busy trying to grab the biggest piece if the pie.

Yeah, MilSims is very much in its infancy. We're working on a new website specifically to give milsimmers somewhere to go where they won't be shunned and criticised by the masses and can feel at home. The challenge to create a sport that isn't exactly socially acceptable, satisfies the majority of its participants, offers the greatest level of realism without falling foul of Police, Government and the wider community and is financially viable for the business that supports it is immense but we're working on it.

Combat Engineers - Unlike EMO's, we can build a bridge and GET OVER IT!

  6. There are leagues all over the place Brisbane just has the one league (that is clan wars) as compared to way down in Victoria near Melbourne they have A, B, C and D grade competitions and if you surf the net on laser skirmish you will find lots of differents businesses all over Australia with all types of Laser skirmish gameplay, like a Milsim event to A grade, clan wars, kids birthday party or whatever suits your fancy

Funnily enough I've looked in the past and never found anything else resembling milsim-type ops in Australia.

  8. Next case Slayer vs. Internet.

DDLS did run a short but successful monthly series of military themed events back starting in mid '07

  9. Sounds like the lasertag in Australia is growing like paintball did here in the States. Started out as just groups in milsim just having fun and then grew to wooded competion, and then developed into the paint slinging so called competion that it is now. I've played both styles and like both. I enjoy the milsim competions that we have here, but expense is getting huge. Just to play is $30, paint fees are $40 or more, and the expense of getting there tops $100 by the time the day is done. Which is usually just about 5 hours worth of play.
This is the main reason for the push to switch to lasertag, with the milsim look. The good thing about living in the south is everyone is very excepting of the milsim look and play. It's not unusual for people to stop and ask if they could join in some time when we all look like a bunch of swat teams on the side of the road.lol
Competion between teams always brings some level of intensity when played. But is enjoyable when you have bragging rights till the next time.
I was just curious at what level you guys at gotten at.
    Thanks!
