Here is my second gun which is almost complete.

i have modeled it around the AR-15/M16 rifle, and i think it looks fairly accurate (except for the barrel). It is made out of steel and MDF.

in case you were wondering how the electronics will fit in it they wont, they'll be in a box attached to my belt, which has been discussed in other threads.

The lens is (will be) a 32mm lens with a focal length of 89mm which if fairly optimal.

The clip will be removable just for the novelty for now, but hopefully later i will implement clip changes into the PIC (somehow)

Any compliments/idea/constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated.

oh, and i also picked up an authentic AR-15/M16 black sling which still has the price tag on it. i think that this makes it look like a proper M16

Could I get a close up of the news paper? It looks like Harvey is having a sale:)
Not to put a dampner on your creative spirit but be careful when building replicas, due to gun control laws.

Good looking gun there
I'm doing the same as you by the sounds of it. All the electronics in a case on my waist.
Should be able to use the 1 set of electronics for different weapons.......fun

Does anyone know where I can find references to 'how real a gun is before its replica'? Or is it just based on common sense? if it looks like a gun and sounds like a gun, then it must be a gun, is that the current ruling?

yeah, i tell people i do it because it allows you to make more realistic guns, but its really because I'm "el cheapo";)

The gun is the centerpeice, not the paper! also, when isn't Harvey having a sale?

with regards to realism, ill have to have a chat with the local law enforcement to see what they can make of it. once i do that ill report back.

first went to the police station, asked them about replica guns and they said they didn;t know go talk to the gun shop.

went to the gun shop, and they said that it was a real "grey area" and it all depends on what "mr policeman" thinks, and that you are "guilty until proven more guilty". THis didn;t really help me at all.

also this is the weapons act 1990 which i think still applies:
http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/qld/consol_act/wa1990107/

interesting point:
WEAPONS ACT 1990 - SECT 58
58 Dangerous conduct with weapon prohibited generally (slightly changed)
A person must not without reasonable excuse; and by the physical possession or use of a replica of a weapon; engage in conduct, alone or with another, likely to cause-- alarm to another person. Maximum penalty--100 penalty units or 2 years imprisonment

also with regards to that question:
WEAPONS ACT 1990 - SECT 6A
6A What is a replica
(1) A replica of a weapon is--

(a) a reasonable facsimile or copy of a weapon, even if it is not capable of discharging a projectile or substance; or

Hey Jader, that is a great looking gun. I'm curious, do you secure the magazine in the gun but still have it removable?

Bah, I meant how do you secure the magazine but still have it removable...

it really is great to have the edit feature... don't worry you'll get it soon.

i havn't tried this yet but i have it all planned out, and hopefully this confusing diagram i made in paint will explain it some.

basically, and keep in mind that i haven't trialled this yet, rather im just assuming that it will work somehow, i will just rivet the plate to the gun (solid) and put the two rivets below them (in line with were the clip will slide up into) just into the sheet not thorugh the clip. Then i will grind/file down the large end of the rivet until it is smooth and deosn't stick out too far (but not so much that it makes the rivet fall out). THen on the clip, i just drill holes (or just recess the metal with a larger drill bit) where the crinded rivets will end up when the clip is fully in. because the clip will be quite strong (as it is made from two square metal pipes welded together, i think i will need to cut slits either side of the hole or recessed part to allow it to bend slightly when insirting the clip. then hopefully the clip will stay in until i pull it out.

The way i did the clip on my last gun was just make using the friction of a tight fitting holder for the clip (dont know if there is a name for this), but it was very ineffective to say the least.

again i stress that this is just my idea and may go horribly wrong:eek: but i have faith in it?

after that lengthly explanation, i would like to know how others go about attaching their removable clips, if they use them. (not really necessary with milestag, but cool nonetheless:D)

I'd worry about any friction or detent fit, where you can just pull the magazine out without releasing a catch. If I'm running about and such, the shaking and bumping might get the magazine to drop out when I don't want it to.

Instead, you might engineer a catch much like the actual rifle uses. Three parts, not too hard to make. You can probably manage a method that doesn't need screw threads if you want. Check out some of the exploded drawings and parts pictures online, such as:

or

yeah the magazine on my first gun is very ineffective, even though it deos stay in relatively well with just a few bumps. For example, when i was demonstrating the gun to my friends, shaking it and making the appropriate noises like it was firing for a little while, and then as soon as i stopped the mag just fell out of the gun as if it was meant to when it was depleted. they laughed:D

Thanks for the links, but i didn't actually see them until id already made the mag catch thing. ended up using my other design that i was going on about before, and it actually works. There is no threat of the mag falling out at an inconvenient time, and its even hard to pull out. maybe ill go all out and technical for my next gun.

anyway here is the latest pic of my gun, broken up into all its individual pieces. all thats left now is to paint them and assemble them.

Shortleif, I've been trying to figure out how to make an M16-style magazine catch for a while now, those links are great. Thanks.

didn't want to start a new post, but here is a gun (laser) that my brother made when he was home for uni (it was only for about 5 days). Its a CETME l or something like that. it is obviously missing the clip and the barrel. The gun is real sturdy and the sights are great to look through. THis gun also isnt designed to have the electronics in it as it is so slim.

done. at last.

weighs about 2.9kg which im happy with even though this ideal weight was unintentional.
deosn't feel like its going to fall apart but the paint is of very poor quality (aus export @ $3 per can, only had enough for one coat too:D)
It obviously looks splendid as its so slim and streamline, ill have to paint the lan cable though, it stick out pretty bad.
It may not look like much to you, but this was a major acheivement for me.:)

Hey mr muffin! here is a basic parts list from memory.

Butt/grip: Two pieces of 16mm MDF cut out and glued together

Main body:
Two 18cm long pieces of 38x38mm square steel tube, side facing each other have holes for access.
Some fairly solid steel plate to cut out trapezoid shape for sides to hold clip in.

Sights:
I went really cheap on my sights as I plan to use a red dot above them anyway.
Rear sights/ carry handle are just about 20x20mm steel tube cut and bent to resemble sights
Front sights are just sheet steel cut and glued on top of barrel (ineffective but quick)

Fore grip:
Two sheets of 16mm mdf with thinner sheets of mdf on either side. Left in halves, routed out square on one half and circle on other half for transition from 20x20mm steel square tube to 20mm PVC pipe. Glued together made to look like a triangle.
Actually now that I think of it, you could save a lot of time by not directly recreating the original m16, but rather one of the later (and very similar) m16 a2 versions. These mainly have cylindrical fore grips, which would be much easier to implement. I just wanted the triangle ones for some reason.
The circular bit just before this is a random bit of metal I found, but any steel/pvc tube will do I guess.

Clip:
Two pieces of 38x38mm steel tubes welded (the only welds on the gun actually, and could be pop riveted if that’s a problem living in Brisbane)

That’s all I can think of now but please do ask some specific questions if you are still interested.

Hi Jader
I was wondering where u got your lens from.....

jader
19-08-2007, 08:17 PM
surplus shed.

i think its been said time and time that it is the best place for getting lenses. i got the 32mm ones with a 89mm focal length. this is fairly optimal and still looks good in a barrel. if you buy 10 of the same kind which i dif they are $3 USD each.
