View Full Version : Feedback on new sound effects
An issue has come up that I would like people who are knowledegable to feedback on.
As some of you know we have recently changed the guns so that each model has its own specific sound scheme when firing full auto. The other change is the low ammunition warning has changed from a beeb to a womans computer game like voice saying "low ammunition".
A certain source believes the new shooting sounds are "kiddie" and the old standard shooting sound is better. What we need to know is the players opinion on this from those people that have heard the news sounds effects (like on the new Pulse and Commando and the new Spitfires that have gone into action)

Plan,
Why don't you give us some links or put them up on the web somewhere.
I can't really comment without hearing them.
Personally I think the low ammunition warning is not required, but I can let you know if I think a sound is 'kiddie' or not.

Plan, i actually have been oblivious to noticing the changes!
Perhaps i will listen more closely on Sunday hehehe, i personally think that the 'low ammunition' notification and 'reloaded' notifications respectively both give away your position through producing so much noise, it is really loud!! I noticed this the other week when i was using the commando (still loved the commando, great asset for any armoury)
My 2 cents are to replace the low ammo with the bleep bleep and then go and make the other sounds standard to keep it with the bling bling :)
I dont see anything wrong with the beep noise, it was good, as for the different firing sounds, thats good cause its realistic

I reckon you should keep it the same as it has been. I think the reload sound would just be for kids.

I would like to know when there will be a silencer mode put in, especially for sniper rifles. Just a little *pfft* sound would do ;)
But i suppose that would need a bigger chip for 3 different sounds?
I too would have to hear the new sounds to make a judgement.
In Regards to the silencer mode, this is simply a matter of reprogramming the sound chip, you could erase the sifi fire mode if you want, the battlefield in Cairns, QLD, has employed a silenced mode by doing just this.
The consensus seems to be that new gun shooting sounds for each model are good.
However its not so clear if overall its a good thing to have a low ammunition and reload sound effects. Our thinking is for new players having the system actually say "ammunition is low" and "Reloaded" makes it a lot easier to understand what is going on. With the old system a lot of new players thought the beep meant they just hit someone and they had no idea when the reload had completed.

I'll have to be honest, when the ammunition is low and the gun
says "ammunition low" it would be fitting for a Sci-fi mission,
however, I think it is out of place in other ww2 missions et cetera.

It just seems strange for you to have gone to all the trouble to develop some great sounds, and then give each gun its own effects, then even go so far as to make the sound of a shell casing bouncing off concrete, but then go and put some sci-fi unrealistic 'beep-beep' noise in.
Maybe its just me, but it doesn't seem to fit.
Beginner/Advanced mode?
Maybe some kind of mode setting (accessed externally) to choose these kind of sounds/settings.

Perhaps BattleField Sports.com could release a media kit which allowed remote battlefield operators to reconfigure the sounds on their guns, like plug it into a computer and load up new sounds via software or wtva i have no idea how it works.
Anyway, the guns already have the 2 way sounds, SND1 SND2 MD1/2. (When you boot it up) And i think that if you want to customise your sounds you can have it done for you by battlefield sports when the guns are being manafacutred for your order.

It is my humble opinion that the new shooting sound effects are fun , but it just makes no sense to equip the guns with a new WW1 mode and than have some girl saying "low ammo". If you really like the girls voice (was it trappers) then keep it for the sci fi mode but I think it is a mistake from a business angle to keep the sounds.
There enough said.
One more thing, I think there should be a limit on the number of upgrades down. Once a year maybe?

Would you listen to the gun sounds or would you rather shoot people?

Plan, I've heard the new sound effects in question and I think that ultimately the choice should be based on what exactly you want to achieve. I think it will do great service for the under 14's, beginners and SciFi missions however, I cannot imagine the regular, more serious players appreciating the noise if it will identify their whereabouts during an opens mission or league. Also, the sound effect is not compatible with most of the missions.
Like Dangerous, I think some sort of "mode setting" that can be accessed externally which enables the Refs to choose the appropriate sound effect for the appropriate mission. In order to make maximum players happy I think it will be well worth the compromise.

Ok, here goes. Right from day 1 there has always been the capability to to have 2 different sounds for ALL noises, not just the gunfire etc. It has never been used though and the problem with implementing it at this time is that for me to write new code that allows you to select a noise, it has to be on the sfx chip in the first place.
As there are only one set of reload, reloaded, ammo low, ammo out samples recorded on the chip currently this would mean reprogramming the sfx chip as well as the microcontroller (there is room on the sfx chip to do this still).
All possible but it would be a logistics nightmare as you would need seperate program versions to go with whatever sfx you had loaded into the chip. It will be bad enough keeping track of this with our own gear where i can do it on a per gun basis but for an existing customer adding to his arsenal it will be worse. It would mean the spares kits wouldnt be compatible as they would have innappropriate code loaded into them that didnt match the sounds etc.
Now I can do all this, fairly easily from a software point of veiw but it will take time. Something which personally I dont have alot of spare right now.
While changes get implemented due to feedback (like increasing the number of spare clips for the lower capacity guns) I dont think we should be chopping and changing all the time. For one I dont have the time to keep altering things.

ok then, thankyou Priest for the technical rundown. Anyone for a cuppa tea?
In all seriousness, maybe then it's better to just leave the original beep sound and the session managers and refs will have to continue to ensure that customers learn to distinguish the beep beep sound:cool:
I have the reloaded, ammunition low and ammunition depleted sounds as Wav files. If you want to contribute to this discussion and want to hear them email me. I'm not going to make these available for downloads
